On September 11, 2003, I was sitting at Unity Center of Austin for a special memorial service for those who died in the tragedy of 2001 and for other losses in our lives.

If you're at all like me, you love the feeling of a Sunday morning church service--the uplifting music, inspirational message, the time of prayer, the shared experience of the presence of God. Then comes Monday morning and it's back to the stresses and pressures of the workaday world. "Back to reality" people will say. Wouldn' it be nice if we brought that Sunday feeling to work with us on Monday?

My grandfather, William Henry Quell (1911-1974), was a seventh grade dropout. He and my grandmother, Esther Marie Quell, raised me. He is the only father figure I’ve ever known, and I gotta tell you, he wasn’t very good at being a dad. He was working all the time! He worked nights, and then he drove school buses during the day. He came home between morning and afternoon bus runs to catch some sleep. But he was always walking out the door with his lunch pail, and I wanted a dad to play catch with me. He didn’t even talk that much. I thought he was, well, stupid.

As I look back now, I see that God’s love and guidance were ever-present in my life, even in my earliest years. I was fortunate to have parents who affirmed me every step of the way.

Through the Resurrection, Jesus showed the world the truth of the reviving, restoring power of God’s spirit within. Although in death Jesus released his human form, that experience was not the end of the story. The death of the man Jesus presented the opportunity for his demonstration of eternal divinity. Jesus showed that even death can be overcome.

During my first careers as teacher, recruiter and consultant, if someone had said, "You're going to write a spiritual book," I’d have burst out laughing. Little did I know that my invitation from Spirit was coming. It came in the form of a brutal divorce.

If we were to stand on a high hill and watch in the valley below the progress of a stream, we would see its breaks and turns, we would see its varying width, we would see clear and clouded areas, still and troubled stretches. But we would see it as one stream, flowing into itself.
